009-1
Anime DVD Review
Based on the hugely popular 'Cyborg 009' franchise, 009-1 creates a new flavor from the following recipe: Mix "James Bond 007" with "Cyborg 009", add a dash of "Le Femme Nikita" and a heaping tablespoon of "Cutey Honey".
Nearly naked, beautiful busty babes are cyborg spys who try and keep the cold war from turning too hot. Set in an alternate reality where the cold war has been ongoing for 140 years, the world has divided into the western and eastern blocks, and the two sides play a cat-and-mouse game of espionage, stealing secrets, and counter-intelligence.
Utilizing the 70's manga by Shataro Ishinomori as its base, the art has a retro-futuristic feel to it. Characters are equipped with "ray guns" (as well as the kind that shoot bullets), and the character designs have that classic Ishonomori 'look' that has dominated anime since the days of the original Cyborg 009.
Combined with a James Bond look-and-feel to the series, the opening titles use a silhouetted female form and the music sounds very John Barry, the series has a 60's feel to it, right down to the main character's "Mrs. Peel" outfit.
Mylene Hoffman, field commander of the elite Zero-Zero Organization, exists in this world with her eyes open and her body always ready to do battle. Liberating benevolent scientists, tagging along with would-be monster-slayers, meeting her match in the world's most hard-boiled assassin and navigating a deadly labyrinth of horrors are all in a day's work for Mylene.
There's no problem she can't solve with the proper application of high explosives, fast-talk, deceptive jewelry, make-up and sultry moves behind closed doors! In a world of spy-mystery and intrigue... discover who she kisses one minute and kills the next.
