Karas - The Prophecy
Karas - The Prophecy
Anime DVD Review by Brian Cirulnick

View our Karas Shrine...Tokyo - a city populated by both humans and by ghostly beings. They exist in both dimensions, seen and unseen: spirits, apparitions, demons. The balance between these two dimensions has long been upheld by the city's guardian raven Karas and his masters. But that balance has been thrown into disarray as Eko, a former Karas, has attempted to seize power and bring order to the streets through force. The entity Yurine, who represents the will of the people, stands in his way with her newly risen Karas. Now an ageless battle stretching across both dimensions and killing humans and spirits alike is in progress between the two sides and their armies. Karas is humanity's last hope.

Armored Trooper Votoms
Armored Trooper Votoms
Anime DVD Review by Brian Cirulnick

In the twilight of a galactic war, Armored Trooper pilot Chirico Cuvie is caught in an illegal mission against his own army when he accidentally witnesses the birth of a top-secret genetic super-soldier. Now a fugitive, Chirico is driven into the criminal haven called Uoodo City!

Armored Trooper VotomsIf ever there was a classic anime series on par with the likes of Gundam or Macross, this is it. Armored Trooper Votoms is simply one of the best anime TV series ever made. Period. End of sentence. A gritty, harsh look at interstellar warfare where the protagonist can't tell his enemies from his friends, Votoms also features the most pragmatic, utilitarian mecha designs ever seen on screen.

This really is classic anime. The story line is solid, engaging, and just as bleak as can be. And there is plenty of action!

Outlanders (20th Anniversary)
Outlanders (20th Anniversary)
Anime DVD Review by Carolyn Whu

OutlandersBoys and girls? Get ready, get set, start drooling. This anime has everything: explosions, beautiful naked alien women, evil villains, and one Earthling that is surrounded by all of it. It might not be as up-to-date visually as the new animes that are out these days but this is an oldie but goodie.

Alien princess, Kahm, comes to Earth looking for a suitable husband. After destroying tomcats, helicopters, tanks, and soldiers galore, she grabs a photographer, Tetsuya, to be her husband-to-be. Think of Heather Graham in a Xena costume or even Princess Leia while she was held captive in Jabba's lair and you might get an inkling of how cute, yet hot, the princess is.

Bottle Fairy
Bottle Fairy
Anime DVD Review by Carolyn Pearce-Lipari

Bottle Fairy"Bottle Fairy" is cute anime. Very cute anime. It's got four cute little fairy girls who live in bottles and do cute things. As cuteness goes, it's very high on the cute meter. If you like cute, you'd be hard pressed to find cuter than this anime series.

So these four little fairies wish to become human. They want to learn about the human world and its customs. They are currently living on a desktop in the home of a high school/college-age boy. They've designated him their "sensei", and have asked him to show them the ways of humans. The next-door neighbor, an eight year-old girl named Tama, pops by every now and then to add her say to the lessons. The fun comes from what the fairy girls make of what they've learned. It all gets a bit jumbled by the time they're done with it.

Anime Video Game Review by Brian Cirulnick

Traditional RPGs (Role Playing Game) have focused on either a fantasy genre or a sci-fi theme. Rising Force Online, by Codemasters provides a mix of both worlds, resulting in an interesting blend of magic and mecha. This next-generation MMO delivers a one-of-a-kind Player versus Player gameplay within a universe where three different factions are at war with one another.
RF Online
Set in a deep space galaxy known as Novus, take your pick from three all-powerful warring factions leading your character into the final battle for total control over the entire Novus galaxy. Chose from either the Bellato Union, taking control of individual robot battle units like never seen before within any MMOG, Holy Alliance Cora, the mystical and fantasy orientated race utilizing the power of magic and finally the mighty Accretia Empire, a futuristic alien race intent on spreading destruction across the entire sector with their advanced weaponry systems.

Bleach (Manga)
Manga Review
by Lawrence Sufrin

Bleach (Manga)Despite the title, Bleach has nothing to do with getting your socks as white as they can be. More likely it'll scare your socks right off.

In explaining this manga, an overused quote must once again be employed. Yes, we hate to tell you this, but Ichigo Kurisaki sees dead people all the time. If there's one thing a healthy, 15 year old, high-school freshman doesn't want, it's a sixth sense to muck things up. Bad enough he has family problems (Arguments tend to turn into knock-down drag-outs.) Now he's attracting bad elements of the unearthly kind. Ichigo is being pursued by an evil spirit known as a Hollow. This Hollow is after him and his family. Whatever plans for a normal life Ichigo had flew out the window. And the ghosts are flying in.

Scrapped Princess (Manga)
Scrapped Princess (Manga)
Manga Review
by Lawrence Sufrin

Scrapped Princess (Manga)And so the Siith Oracle of St. Grendel gave a dire prediction. She proclaimed that twins would be born to the king of Linevan. The baby girl would bring about the end of humanity when she turned 16. The order came down that the female infant must be destroyed (scrapped was the term given). And the order was thought to have been carried out.

This was not, however, the case. The girl lived.

Review by Brian Cirulnick

Do the Brak!An album that never gets old, Brak (originally an enemy of Space Ghost, who became a sensation via Cartoon Network's Late Night TV show spoof "Space Ghost Coast to Coast") sings some of his favorites, including our favorite "Drivin' Down Highway 40 in my big old pickup truck" (now sing like Tom Browkaw!, okay now underwater!).

 The MIT "Cool Japan" Symposium

Our friends at AnimePulse just recorded the MIT "Cool Japan" Symposium and released it as a podcast. The podcast features Professor Anne Allison (Duke University) speaking on Pokemon capitalism and desire, John O'Donnell (founder, Central Park Media) on Otaku entrepreneurs and anime distribution in the US, and Professor Ian Condry (MIT) on fansubs, piracy and global media.

We're big fans of John O'Donnell at Anime.com as he gave us our first big break in new media way back in 1991 when he produced the CD-ROM "The World of US Manga Corps". So we're sure that John has some good insights into the industry that are worth download worthy.
