Black Lagoon
Black Lagoon
Anime DVD Review by Brian Cirulnick

Black LagoonRokuro Okajima is a meek, mild-mannered, middle-manager nobody working a dead-end, life-draining, white-collar, meaningless job for a giant, faceless corporation. However; his business trip in South-East Asia turns from pleasure cruise to terror when modern-day pirates board the ship to take the corporate data he is transporting. Grabbed initially as a hostage, he finds that he is expendable (according to his boss), and so, he joins with Dutch, Revy and Benny, who make up the crew of the Black Lagoon, a 'privateer' operation run from a PT Boat that takes on any job offered to them. Innocent Venus
Innocent Venus
Anime DVD Review by Brian Cirulnick

Innocent VenusIf you're a fan of post-apocalyptic-style shows with tons of explosions and carnage, then this is the anime series you've been waiting for! extremely high-quality production value (in other words, the series looks totally amazing, no expense was spared) and pretty kickin' music to boot, the sheer level of action will hook you into the storyline and keep you coming back for more.

Boasting a really big story with really big action, Innocent Venus hails from famed production studio Bandai Visual (Mobile Suit Gundam, Cowboy Bebop) and Director Jun Kawagoe (New Getter Robo). Innocent Venus is anything but your run-of-the-mill mecha story. This is an exciting, action-packed series with sophisticated settings, great character designs and a fluid animation style that incorporates 3D cell-shading. The entire production is top-notch. Afro-Samurai
Afro-Samurai
Anime DVD Review by Brian Cirulnick

Afro-SamuraiStatement of Bias — I'll watch *anything* with Samuel L. Jackson in it - even Snakes on a Plane! So, it should come as no surprise that I found this pairing of Jackson, anime, and the Spike TV network to be a real hoot. And in no way whatsoever does it disappoint — costing an obscene $1 million per episode, this Gonzo-created, over-the-top extravaganza is loaded with bloody carnage, action-on-top-of-action, and fight scene followed by fight scene — heck, we don't even get to the beginning of the plot until well into episode two! MXC: Most Extreme Elimination Challenge
MXC: Most Extreme Elimination Challenge
Japanese Television DVD Review
by Laurence Sufrin

MXC: Most Extreme Elimination Challenge"What are these people running FROM? They're not. They're running TO... the world's toughest competition in town!" MXC (Most Extreme Elimination Challenge) is a masterpiece of outrageous buffoonery and the crown jewel of Spike TV. Now, the second season of this instant cult classic is out on DVD thanks to Magnolia Home Entertainment.

This pop culture phenomenon has taken the country by storm while winning acclaim from such prestigious authorities as the New York Times, Chicago Sun-Times, USA and MTV. College campuses have reconstructed the obstacle courses and events in a fannish effort to duplicate the show. (Kids! Don't try this at home.) Read More...

Rosetta Stone Japanese Level 1
Rosetta Stone Japanese Level 1
for Windows & Macintosh
Software Review by Brian Cirulnick

Used by the State Department to train diplomats. Proven effective by NASA astronauts, Peace Corps volunteers and millions of students, Fairfield Language Technology's "Rosetta Stone" series of language learning software uses an "immersive environment" where you are immediately thrown into learning the language. No English is used whatsoever by the software.

How it is done is that you are shown a picture of something and the word is given, similar to how a picture-book might have been used by you as a child. Great for nouns, but how do they convey the other parts of language, and then communicate proper sentence structure? Well, that's their secret. Read More...

Star Trek: The Manga
Star Trek: The Manga
Manga Review
by Brian Cirulnick

Star Trek: MangaOf course. After 6 TV series, more movies than anyone can count (and more movies on the way!), books, magazines, toys, DVD sets, and more, very will few will ever argue that Star Trek is one of the most successful Sci-Fi franchises of all time. So, of course, a manga version seems... eminently logical, captain. Read More...
