Devil May Cry
Devil May Cry
Anime DVD Review by Brian Cirulnick

Devil May CryHis name is Dante. Half demon and half human, he is charged with ridding the world of the demons that plague it — for the right price. Neck-deep in debt, he's usually out for cold, hard cash. The doors to his business, "Devil May Cry", are always open to those with significant financial resources, and occasionally to some without (Blackjack, where art thou?).

Based on the Capcom game series and being released in conjunction with a "Devil May Cry 4" for PS3 and Xbox360, the ADV series Devil May Cry is this year's must-see anime — not just for gamers (although they may get the most out of it, being already familiar with the characters), but anyone who enjoys a healthy dose of monsters, mayhem, guns, sexy girls, explosions, swords, slayings, hacking and slashing, and oh, more sexy girls! Tokyo Majin
Tokyo Majin
Anime DVD Review by Brian Cirulnick

Tokyo MajinThe wrestling club captain, the archery team captain, the class delinquent and the mysterious transfer student. In high school, during the day, these people aren't even friends. But when the light fades, and the hordes of zombies fill the streets, they band together to try and save their city from destruction.

Feeling a bit like Resident Evil or Silent Hill (the games, not the movies), the zombies are terrifying and the muted palette of colors helps convey a feeling of having the life sucked out of them. Read More...

Le Chevalier D'Eon
Le Chevalier D'Eon
Anime DVD Review by Brian Cirulnick

Le Chevalier D'EonHonest, this is Japanese anime, despite having a nearly unpronounceable French name. What's more, this is *really* REALLY good anime, based (somewhat) on actual historical events (so you can almost call it studying!) that took place in 18th century France, although some names have been changed to protect the innocent.

It is the era of King Louis XV, on the eve of the French Revolution. Versailles glitters and its full glory and the great river Seine sees beautiful Paris in a ghastly chaos. One day at dawn, a lady's body is found in a casket floating along the Seine. Her name is Lia de Beaumont, and there is a mysterious word on the lid of the casket: PSALMS. Read More...

Venus Versus Virus
Venus Versus Virus
Anime DVD Review by Carolyn Whu

Venus Versus VirusWhen demons come-a-callin', the world depends on... who else but two high school girls, Lucia and Sumire, to save the day. High school students by day and employees of Venus Vanguard at night, Lucia and Sumire are blessed (though Sumire thinks it's really a curse) with the ability to see these demons that they call Viruses. If they can see them, they can sure as hell beat them to a pulp as well.

Lucia accepts her fate of cleaning up the world of Viruses and she takes it very seriously. She knows it's a kill or be killed world out there; she harbors none of the romantic ideas that if she doesn't bother the Viruses, they won't bother her. In a strange way, she actually wants to fight stronger and stronger Viruses as if the stronger they get, it means that she has killed off all the weaker Viruses already. Read More...

Naruto: Clash of the Ninja Revolution
(for Nintendo Wii)

Anime Videogame Review by Carolyn Whu

NarutoWhen I heard about the Wii, I thought I would never get addicted to any of their games. They are geared more towards kids and I am most certainly not a kid... age-wise, at least. After being forced to go through the Wii experience, I found out that I am still mentally 12 years old and loved the interactivity of the Wii. Where else but on the Wii can you work up a sweat beating the crap out of Orochimaru?

Maybe I should start at the beginning for all the adults out there. Orochimaru is the evil bad guy that the entire ninja Leaf Village is up against. Specifically, Naruto (our title character), Sasuke (his best friend and main competitor in becoming the future leader of the village), and Sakura (Naruto's love interest and Sasuke's secret admirer) lead by Kakashi Sensei are fated to be the ones that can slow Orochimaru's plan to take over the village. AzuManga Daioh
Manga Review
by Carolyn Whu

Before there was Lucky Star, there was Azumanga Daioh. It's not as cavity cute as Lucky Star and not as much inane humor either but the storyline is much more coherent and that much crazier to even things out. Azumanga Daioh started off as a comic strip before it was turned into an anime so it's only a matter of time that a compilation of the comic strip was put together into an actual manga book. Fandomania
Fandomania
Anime Book Review
by Brian Cirulnick

In Fandomania, photographer Elena Dorfman examines the pop culture phenomenon of "cosplay," in which participants dress up in costumes (and live part of their lives) as characters from video games, animated films, and Japanese graphic novels. This exploding subculture flourishes at convention centers, college dorms, private clubs, and in homes across the country. Dorfman puts herself quietly behind the scenes of these fan-based events to create a remarkable collective portrait. Read More...
