AppleSeed Ex Machina
Appleseed Ex Machina
Anime DVD Review by Brian Cirulnick

AppleSeed Ex MachinaI thought 2004's CGI Appleseed movie was about as good as it was going to get for the franchise, but I stand corrected. Appleseed Ex Machina is a tour-de-force of edge of your seat action wrapped around a solid love-triangle storyline, wrapped around a decent sci-fi plot.

Produced by John Woo (yes, John Woo!) it's full of his signature style of gunplay with lots of slo-mo bullets and enough detail to have you watching it again and again just to experience everything that's happening all at once. It's detail overload in fact, and can become mind-numbing at times trying to absorb it all. Read More...

Anime DVD Review by Brian Cirulnick

xxxHolicNo, it's not about being addicted to porn. Get your mind out of the gutter, this is from CLAMP after all, so it's got a level of taste and sophistication, style and sensibility, as do all CLAMP creations. But in this case, it also has a definite sense of irony, dark humor, and horror.

It's about obsession. And once an obsession becomes overwhelming, it's an addiction. Or, it could simply be you're possessed by a bad spirit. Either way, if you can find yourself at Yuko Ichihara's shop, she might be able to help you. Yuko is a witch, got a problem with that? Read More...

Mushishi
Anime DVD Review by Brian Cirulnick

MushishiAlthough it sounds like the popular early-80's toy Monchichis, Mushishi is actually a deep, insightful and thought provoking series that will take you places few anime have dared. For starters, it's not your typical anime by any means. There are no robots, scantily clad babes, explosions or gunplay. There are no alien princesses, catgirls with swords, ninjas, gallant thieves, or cool-as-ice bounty hunters.

What there is, however, is gobs and gobs of incredible artwork. Eye-popping, mind boggling, like, you actually want to watch anime for the first time in HD, kind of artwork. Read More...

Kappa Mikey
Kappa Mikey
Anime DVD Review by Brian Cirulnick

Kappa MikeyThis is, without a doubt, the wackiest, zaniest, most laugh-out-loud funny anime series I've ever seen, and guess what — it's not an anime series at all. It is a clever parody of both Japanese anime and American cartoons. Produced for Nickelodeon, and running regularly on Nicktoons, Kappa Mikey is a hysterical send-up of pop culture from both sides of the Pacific, and much more in tune with your anime sensibilities than you'd expect.

Made in America (using Adobe Flash) but done in a Japanese style to give it an anime look, the series is rife with anime in-jokes, as well as hysterical recreations of popular anime archetypes doing what they do best... making trouble. Read More...

Devil May Cry 4
Devil May Cry 4
Videogame Review by Brian Cirulnick

Devil May Cry 4I'd say "based on the anime series", but the anime series is based on the game. We're already up to the 4th incarnation of this game, and amazingly, the designers and programmers at Capcom have done an outstanding job of bringing this series a lot of life.

A lot of that "life" comes from how much of a sweat you'll be working up just trying to *live* through the game. Even with the difficultly level set at the default, the game assumes you know how to use your controller, because it's going to have you working it in a way that'll wear the colors off the buttons. It is high time to relive the beauty and magic that is Sailor Moon, but this time, we get to really experience it where it all began... with the manga!
