Anime DVD Review by Brian Cirulnick

Afro Samurai: ResurrectionFile this one under "Oh yeah".

Super bad-ass of the world Samuel L. Jackson returns to reprise his role as the ass-kicker of all ass-kickers in a production that can only be described as 'totally over the top', with lavish production values and more than enough action to satisfy even the most die-hard of action fans.

Also included to up the ante is Lucy Lui, playing Sio, a beautiful seductive and sadistic mastermind plotting to destroy Afro Samurai. As if that weren't enough, additional casting includes Mark Hamill as Bin, Sio's manservant and protector, and Yuri Lowenthal (the voice of Sauske in the hit anime series Naruto) as Kuma, the teddy bear-headed warrior from the original Afro Samurai series. Anime DVD Review by Brian Cirulnick

Ouran High School Host ClubHere's one for the ladies, but it's just as much fun for guys!! This shoujo anime reverses the usual "harem" stereotype in that this time, it's one girl surrounded by many good-looking guys and has been a big hit with both the ladies and the gentlemen for both its zany humor and it's relatively subtle drama.

Haruhi Fujioka is the lone impoverished scholarship student at Ouran High School, a school for kids so rich that a group of boys started a Host Club to entertain their female schoolmates in. Read More...

Negima!?: Spring Summer
Anime DVD Review by Brian Cirulnick

Negima!? : Spring SummerNegima, from Love Hina's creator, Ken Akamatsu, is basically what happens when you take an underage wizard, and throw him to the wolves... or in this case, a class of 31 hormone-frenzied teenage girls who all happen to find him adorable.

In this OVA (based on the series), Ayaka arranges a romantic getaway, determined to lift the little professor's spirits (and possibly something more!), but when the rest of the group finds out, the outing turns into a no-holds-barred spring break in a warm tropical paradise. Rest assured that the bathing suits are sparse, and should Negima accidentally sneeze, even their itty-bitty outfits will disappear in a puff of magic. Read More...

Anime DVD Review by Brian Cirulnick

Strait JacketImagine this if you will —— a great experiment is performed that introduces to a modern world the *technology* of sorcery. Proven to be a viable technology, magic is suddenly integrated into all aspects of industry, medicine, entertainment, and the military.

But, the power of such magic comes at a price: like any "technology", it can easily be abused, and humans who do not take the proper precautions and cast too many spells can be transformed into murderous, horrific, uncontrollable demons that then go on a killing spree if left unchecked. Girlfriend T-Shirt

This T-Shirt has written in Kanji "Looking for Japanese Girlfriend". Fortunately, if no one around you can read Japanese, you're just wearing a cool-looking T-shirt with some undecipherable Kanji on it. But, if you're really, really REALLY lucky, there will be a nice Japanese girl that *can* read it, and will understand that you're looking and available.

And then you'll have a nice lady friend who can translate all your manga and anime!!!

And having a girlfriend wouldn't hurt either, since you spend too much time watching anime, and your other friends are starting to look at you funny.

Manga Review
by Brian Cirulnick

Blackjack MangaI could probably list a thousand reasons to own this manga. However, editorial guidelines and internet bandwidth prevent me from writing a review that long. Suffice to say that Blackjack is one of *the* iconic manga, a defining, shining example of everything that is awesome about the medium, and certainly one of the greatest creations of Osumu Tezuka, a man who can humble *any* manga author, and the progenitor of all we hold holy from Japan. Manga Review
by Brian Cirulnick

GankutsuouWhen Battlestar Galactica coined the term "re-imagining", it set loose a series of mindstorms, allowing producers to take something old, and make it entirely new again.

Del Rey's space-age revenge manga is based on the Gonzo anime series, which, if you've ever read The Count of Monte Cristo, you'll immediately recognize the characters and have a pretty good handle on what's going on. Read More...

Animation Book Review

Unfiltered: The Complete Ralph BakshiYou gotta' hand it this guy. He ALWAYS made animated films for adults, way before anyone else, even when the Japanese were producing only animation for kids. Now admittedly, the adults Ralph was making films for were LSD-taking, pot-smoking hippies, and trust me, many of his films look better under the influence of *something*. Read More...
