Persona4: The Animation
Persona4: The Animation
ペルソナ4
Anime Review by Karen Gellender

Persona4: The AnimationWhile the Megami Tensei (or MegaTen) series of role-playing games have never featured the jaw-dropping visuals of the Final Fantasy series, or enjoyed the massive popularity of Dragon Quest, you just can't beat the series for style. The Shin Megami Tensei: Persona spin-off series, of which there are four main entries, does a particularly good job of wrapping up a modern day setting and the mythological lore the greater franchise is known for with incredible flair. Between the art style, the music, and clever interface design, playing Persona feels like nothing else. Read More...

Daily Lives of High School Boys
Daily Lives of High School Boys
男子高校生の日常
Anime Review by Karen Gellender

Daily Lives of High School BoysIf Daily Lives of High School Boys doesn't make you crack a smile the first time you see it, you probably haven't watched much recent anime in the high-school life genre. If you have the time and inclination to fix this problem, go watch Lucky Star, K-On!, Nichijou, and either A-Channel or Yuru Yuri (your choice!) Now, notice how Daily Lives has suddenly become hysterically funny? Behold: the power of satire.

While focusing on the recent glut of slice of life anime in particular, Daily Lives of High School Boys (or "Nichbros", as it's popularly called online, a play on Nichjou) makes fun of many of the trends in modern anime. Even though we actually like some of the shows it frequently enjoys skewering, such as K-On!, it's still fun to see someone rip apart the cliches that have become alarmingly common on Japanese TV these days. There's also plenty of fourth-wall breaking, just in case you thought there was any danger they were taking this satire business too seriously. Read More...

Bakemonogatari
Bakemonogatari
化物語,
Anime Review by Karen Gellender

Bakemonogatari"Bakemono" means ghost or monster while "monogatari" means story or stories, so one good English translation of the title Bakemonogatari is "GhoStory." However, a more revealing English title might be ExistentialiStory: despite the emphasis on freaky monsters, with the play-like focus on bizarre conversations between two characters, the show often feels like the anime version of Beckett's Waiting for Godot. There's no denying that Bakemonogatari is strange, but fortunately it's often as interesting as it is bizarre.

The most immediately compelling character is Hitagi Senjougahara, a coldly intense high school girl who somehow keeps a nigh-infinite amount of school supplies hidden under her skirt. Eschewing guns and knives, Senjougahara has decided that staplers and pens are the weapons of the future, and she's quick to wield them when anyone discovers a shameful secret: for some reason, she weighs almost nothing. When Koyomi Araragi, a seemingly normal classmate, catches her after a fall and realizes this, it's stapler-to-the-face time.

First Squad: The Moment of Truth
First Squad: The Moment of Truth
ファースト・スクワッド
Anime Review by Brian Cirulnick

First Squad: The Moment of TruthA young girl with extraordinary abilities is all that stands between Russia and the invading German army. During the winter of 1941/42, the Second World War comes to a temporary standstill on the Eastern Front yet both the Nazi forces and the Soviets are putting everything they have in order to turn the tide in their favor.

The Germans try the occult angle, and summon the long-dead Baron von Wolff (from the period of the crusades) to intercede during "the moment of truth" (a rare moment when actions of a single man can determine the outcome of an event, a battle or even the entire war) by decimating the Soviet forces using a Zombie Army. To counter this plan, special occult branch of the Soviet Intelligence, called 6th Division, deploys its best agent - 14-year-old esper girl Nadya, the only survivor from the special occult operations unit of 6th Division - the "First Squad".
