Magical Girls: A Petit History
Magical Girls: A Petit History
魔法*ガ ルズ

Article by Karen Gellender

Magical Girls: A Petite History Frilly dresses, glittering swirls of light, cute-as-a-button talking animals — these are the things that come to mind at the mention of magical girls. For many examples of the genre, this is accurate, but it wasn't always thus. The magical girl genre, which debuted with Sally The Witch before the days of color TV, took a while to achieve the form we now know so well, and fans might be surprised to learn that its plots were not always magical, or even about--or intended for--girls. The image of a ballerina-esque magical girl dancing and fighting her foes with pink rays of magic may be our go-to image, but it's probably fair to say that the genre has more breadth and complexity than we often give it credit for. たまこまーけっと

Anime Review by Ben Huber

Tamako MarketKyoto Animation, or 'KyoAni' as they're called by their fans, have a long history of shows about cute girls. ぷちます!-プチ・アイドルマスター-

Anime Review by Linda Yau

PUCHIM@SWatching Puchidols brings to mind one thing and this is nendroids. Nendroids is a type of collectible figurines that are character replicas stylized in a super deformed or a chibi manner. For Japanese fans this screams kawaii, and for fans of this show, there is the same fuzzy feeling.

Puchidols or Puchim@s is a spinoff of the anime Idol Master, so watching this series requires at least some degree of characters knowledge to make this show more personable. But not really, so if you're a new viewer to this show then by all means sink in these hilarious slice of life shorts where the Producer is a stylized 'P' caricature and there are plenty of cute female mini idols; each aptly representing their humanoid counterparts.

Shakugan no Shana
Shakugan no Shana
灼眼のシャナ

Anime Review by Brian Cirulnick

Shakugan no ShanaHair of flame and eyes ablaze. That's what they say about this Flame Haze. Shakugan no Shana thrusts you into what seems like a normal version of Japan, except this one has a hidden mythology, where extradimensional demons phase into our world, consume humans and then are killed by Flame Hazes, who set everything right -- sort of.

They can't actually restore the people, so temporary duplicates called Flames are put in their place, which look and act like the original people, ... for a while. As the flame slowly dies, the person's "existence" in this reality also slowly fades, until no one remembers them, and all trace that they ever existed is slowly removed. This eases the "impact" of the person having died in the first place...
