Good Luck Girl!
Good Luck Girl!
貧乏神が!
Anime Review by Brian Cirulnick

Okay let's see, here's yet another boring, seen it all before... wait a minute, did they just reference Dirty Harry in the opening song???

Ichiko Sakura is a lucky girl. A very lucky girl. Incredibly lucky. Blessed, even, she's smart, sexy, beautiful, rich, athletic, and nothing bad ever happens to her. She is, in fact, a good-luck vampire, sucking the luck from other people and bestowing it onto herself. She's so lucky that she's upset the balance of luck and even the gods have taken notice.

So, a poverty-god has been assigned to her case to take back some of that luck and redistribute the wealth, so to speak. Poverty-God Momiji, a slacker if there ever was one, begrudgingly takes the case. And Momiji initially thinks that things would be simple, except Ichiko has no intention of letting her luck be taken. Ichiko wants to continue to be smart, beautiful, have the attention of all the boys, be despised by all the other girls, and have everything in the world come to her on a silver platter and intends to fight Momiji with every trick she can think of, preventing her from taking her happiness energy. ミチコとハッチン
Anime Review by Brian Cirulnick

The series starts with a daring escape from the female ward of a high security prison, and initially I was worried that I was watching another series that exists merely to inundate me with fan service.

To my relief, that's not where we end up going. Instead, after a very nice title sequence (very Roy Lichtenstein, with zip-a-tone over pantone, complemented by an appealing jazzy score reminiscent of Cowboy Bebop) we're then introduced to nine-year-old Hana, who leads a Cinderella lifestyle of cooking and cleaning for a cruel foster family of a priest, who only seem to be "caring" for Hana to collect child support checks.

Hana's most fervent wish is for someone to come rescue her from this hellish life, but she needed to be careful about what she wished for, because a sexy woman on a scooter bursts in to claim her. Read More...

Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail
Black Lagoon:
Roberta's Blood Trail

ブラック・ラグーン
Anime Review by Brian Cirulnick

For those of you who think that the original Black Lagoon TV series wasn't bloody enough, along comes Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail, a series so violent and full of spattering blood, I'd swear the digital cel-painters simply got the red paint button stuck on the keyboard and just decided to go crazy.

Roberta, you may recall, was a Maid (or wore a maid uniform to go un-noticed), but she was clearly a top-notch mercenary who could kill in numbers that would make Revy envious. In this story, she really does become a maid to the South American Lovelace family, who are involved in local politics. However, the patriach, Diego, is killed by a American assasination squad who are disrupting a politcal rally. Read More...

Fashion Cats
Fashion Cats
ファッション猫
Japanese Culture Book Review by Michael Pinto

Fashion Cats isn’t a serious fashion history book or a serious study of Japanese culture — but it is a wonderful inspiring little gift book for anyone who loves looking at fashionable fuzzy little creatures. On the surface the book is richly illustrated with dozens of high quality photos of cats wearing a wide range of well tailored couture, however you quickly realize that the real rock star of this book is Takako Iwasa who started the first clothing store for cats in the world.

The idea of doing a clothing store may seem obvious to us today, but what’s interesting is that Takako Iwasa came up with this pioneering concept all the way back in year 2000. Her business inspiration at the time was a 16 year old girl from rural Japan who started an online t-shirt shop. And around the same time her mother made a cape for her cat Prin, and thus she started off on her epic journey of building a cat clothing empire. Of course at the time there weren’t any cat tailors (it was a bit of a taboo), however to be fair there was an established market for dog clothing so she knew she in her heart that she could make it work.Read More...
