Anime Review by Brian Cirulnick

Kamisama Kiss Kamisama Kiss might seem a little "familiar" to you if you've seen Inuyasha. But while Inuyasha was in-your-face, Kamisama Kiss is a bit more subtle, although it goes for the comedy element in that same style as all modern anime.

Nanami is a 17-yr old High School girl with a few problems presented in the first 5 minutes, and by problems, I mean she's homeless. Her father amassed a lot of gambling debts, he's run off and the house was seized, she was kicked out, and soon finds herself sitting on a park bench contemplating the fact that she's going to have to spend the night there. But she hears someone yelling for help and finds a man in a tree scared to death of a small dog barking at him. Read More...

Jormungand
Jormungand
ヨルムンガンド

Anime Review by Brian Cirulnick

Jormungand"Let's not get all Tarantino about this..." -- Oh, but we do, and very quickly. It takes all of 5 minutes into the first episode before everyone's shooting at everyone and they start throwing in military grade hardware just to make things interesting.

Jormungand may be the hardest-to-describe anime of 2014. Our protagonist and central character is Jonah, a former child-soldier who's parents were killed, and as such, hates weapons, soldiers and so forth -- and yet, as a solider himself despite his diminutive size, he is a crack shot and a cold-blooded killer. Somehow, he has fallen in with an arms dealer named Koko and her entourage of top-notch mercenaries who act as her bodyguards. He's her newest recruit, and the action starts on his very first day. Space Battleship Yamato: the live action film
Space Battleship Yamato
宇宙戦艦ヤマト

Japanese Live Action Film Review by Brian Cirulnick

Space Battleship YamatoThis 2010 LIVE ACTION adaption of the incredibly popular anime series manages to stay very true to the overall series while also feeling very much like the reboot of Battlestar Galactica (hint: Yuki is Starbuck). For us die-hard Star Blazers fanboys, this movie was a godsend. Sure, as a live-action film, the over-the-top acting by the Japanese cast makes it feel more like a cartoon than the actual cartoon, but their hearts were in the right place — it is a film made by Yamato fans *for* Yamato fans and that can never be denied.

It's a fun romp through the universe towards the Great Magellanic Cloud, and the pacing is good enough to keep the over 2 hour film feeling like a 90-minute quickie. True fans might feel that the film glosses over a lot of the good points of "season1", but hey, how much can you cram into a single movie? Read More...

Good Luck Girl!
Good Luck Girl!
貧乏神が!
Anime Review by Brian Cirulnick

Okay let's see, here's yet another boring, seen it all before... wait a minute, did they just reference Dirty Harry in the opening song???

Ichiko Sakura is a lucky girl. A very lucky girl. Incredibly lucky. Blessed, even, she's smart, sexy, beautiful, rich, athletic, and nothing bad ever happens to her. She is, in fact, a good-luck vampire, sucking the luck from other people and bestowing it onto herself. She's so lucky that she's upset the balance of luck and even the gods have taken notice.

So, a poverty-god has been assigned to her case to take back some of that luck and redistribute the wealth, so to speak. Poverty-God Momiji, a slacker if there ever was one, begrudgingly takes the case. And Momiji initially thinks that things would be simple, except Ichiko has no intention of letting her luck be taken. Ichiko wants to continue to be smart, beautiful, have the attention of all the boys, be despised by all the other girls, and have everything in the world come to her on a silver platter and intends to fight Momiji with every trick she can think of, preventing her from taking her happiness energy.
