Anime DVD Review

I absolutely hate it when friends get me hooked on stuff. All they say is, "Oh, there is something that I think you might like." So innocent, so nonchalant. It's the same thing crackdealers say when they give you that first sample, I think. They never tell you that you'll constantly want bigger and bigger hits. They also never tell you that you'll be coming back, looking for them till the end of time looking for that next hit. You are their new best friend.

Black Blood Brothers is my newest crack. My crack pipe died for two days and that's when I figured out how addicted I was to this Funimation series. It's not a new show. It first showed up as a light novel by Kohei Azano in 2004 and then an anime series in 2006 but it's only being released in the US this year. It reminds me of a mish mosh between Trigun, HellSing, and Trinity Blood. It has the lightheartedness of Trigun throughout most of the series but it's punctuated but the blood, violence, and heaviness of HellSing and Trinity Blood when the action and drama steps into play.

Black Blood BrothersThe world was not supposed to know that vampires existed. For centuries, vampires were able to track exactly who was made by whom and had their traditions of lineage and abilities kept secret. In 1997, a rogue vampire started his own lineage that blew everything out into the open. His lineage was able to create vampires or convert those of other lineages to his own by a simple bite, no blood needed to be exchanged. The battle that ensued to wipe out this line, the Kowloon Children, by both the traditional lineages and humans was known as the Kowloon Shock. Most of the Kowloon Children were wiped out and, to the human world, the entire world of vampires was wiped out by this war. The Order Coffin Company covers up the existence of the remaining vampires in a special city that they set them up in: the Special Zone. It is the only city in the world where vampires are acknowledged and allowed to openly coexist with humans. If it was anywhere else in the world, the OCC has the right to wipe them out. If the vampire is one of the remaining Kowloon Children, the Special Zone will not protect them and they will still be persecuted.

Black Blood BrothersThe hero of the Kowloon Shock is known to most as "Silver Blade" or "Kin Slayer", a vampire who lost his master and true love who destroyed most of the Kowloon Children with his silver blade. Knowing that his little brother, Kotaro, cannot stay isolated and safe forever in their secluded country estate, Jiro Mochizuki has finally decided to travel to the Special Zone to seek civilization and protection. Barely started on his journey, Jiro and Kotaro get thrown into the middle of a fire fight on a freight ship between the OCC Suppression Team and a small band of vampires with unknown lineages. Kotaro flies overboard and that's when we find out not only is Jiro weak against sunlight like a normal vampire but he is also weak against water. By the time Jiro saves Kotaro from sinking into the abyss of the ocean, he was seen emerging from the beach by humans in broad daylight. The sunlight and water has burned most of his flesh off of his body as he slowly drags both their bodies onto the sand. Luckily for him, the OCC Compromiser Team (they are the good guys to the Suppression Team's bad guy; they believe that humans and vampires can happily and peacefully live together) sent Mimiko Katsuragi to rescue them and evaluate them for entry into the Special Zone.

Black Blood BrothersThe closer the three get to the Special Zone the more battles Jiro encounter. Once he enters the Special Zone, he still has old battles and old enemies that he needs to face. Will he be able to protect Kotaro long enough to find what he needs in the Special Zone? When and will he be able to find the protection that he wants for Kotaro? Is Kotaro really his little brother? Why is there a strange teenage looking vampire following them? Why won't Jiro's friends in the Special Zone help him? I can't watch this series fast enough to answer all my questions! When is my next hit?!?
