Anime DVD Review

And now for something completely different. We mean it. This series is so whacked out, you'd swear the creator was insane and on drugs all at the same time. I mean, we're talking about a guy who fights people with his NOSE HAIR!!!!! It is sheer, utter nonsense and easily one of the funniest things ever aired on TV. Don't try and make sense of it, you'll just get a migraine.

Bobobo does indeed have a basic premise, although, like the show itself it's completely off-the-wall. Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo takes place in the year 300X, when a tyrannical emperor, Czar Baldy Bald 4th, seeks to prove his authority over the people by waging a "Hair Hunt," aimed at taking the hair of all the citizenry.

Bobobo-Bo Bo-BoboWhile the populace trembles in fear, one man with a Golden Afro rises to take a stand Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo. Together with his partners, Bo-bobo launches into battle against the "Hair Hunt Troops" to put an end to the Hair Hunt once and for all.

This amazingly obtuse anime series uses puns (really, really BAD puns, mind you),non sequiturs, double-talk, breaking of the fourth wall, non-sexualized cross-dressing, visual gags, and satirical & pop-culture references, which make its humor very specific to Japanese audiences (much in the same way The Simpsons is often not as accessible to non-native English-speaking audiences). And that's just the first episode!

Much of the humor of the show is very random, with much of it being focused on various pun jokes, so the show's humor is often difficult to understand (at first). It makes fun of/mocks other anime shows, such as: Dragonball, Sailor Moon, Fist of the North Star, Doremon, Gundam, Pokemon, Naruto & Serial Experiments Lain.

Bobo-bo is obviously the hero of the show, but his behavior can often be contrary to that of other typical heroes & role-models of Japanese anime. In other words, his behavior is often childish, arbitrary, incomprehensible & self-important. However he battles/deals with his enemies in the same fashion, which is by confusing them into submission.

You will laugh until you cry. You will laugh until it hurts, until you're gasping for breath. I was laughing about it just writing this review!
