The Most Anticipated Japanese Videogames this Season
Article by Ben Huber

This holiday season is packed with new games! No matter what type of game you like, there's going to be something for you here. But what stands out from the pack? What's new and crazy? How many old favorites are coming back for more? Our top ten games covers a little bit of everything, from RPGs and rhythm games to action games and fighters. Dive in and see what's headed a console near you!

Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA F 2nd

Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA F 2nd
If you're looking for rhythm-game action, it's hard to go wrong with Hatsune Miku! This game is the second game in the Project DIVA F series, featuring more tapping and touch screen goodness along to a pretty big collection of Miku songs (and her assorted cohorts in rhythm). Since it's on PS3 and Vita, you get cross-save support and AR camera activities on the Vita. It's a perfect portable music game for whenever you need to waste a little time. (November 18th)

Final Fantasy XIII (PC)

Final Fantasy XIII (PC)
One of Square Enix's most popular (and sequel-ed) interactions of the Final Fantasy series is finally coming to PC. A lot of Japanese RPGs are coming to Steam now, and it's really great to see PC-averse publishers showing up there. Lightning's game will also now have Steam cloud saves and achievements, plus its heavily discounted price. If you've held off on playing it before, now might be a good time to check it out. (October 9th)

The Legend of Korra

The Legend of Korra
You might be surprised to learn that Platinum Games is making a Legend of Korra video game -- although, if you already knew that, then you're probably chomping at the bit for it. It'll be a third-person action game (as you might guess given Platinum's pedigree), using all four elements in battle to make huge combos. While not a full-size game, it's still said to amount ot about 6 or 8 hours of gameplay. It'll be a downloadable title on PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, and PS4. (PC, PS3, PS4 - October 21st, Xbox One, Xbox 360 - 22nd)

Bayonetta 2

Bayonetta 2
Saved from the brink of death by Nintendo, Bayonetta 2 on the Wii U is the sequel to the crazy third-person action game featuring a witch who fights with... her hair. It's also the second game from Platifum Games on this list. Ridiculous demons, overpowered angels, and huge bosses that fill the screen are the name of the game. You'll also get a free copy of the first game when you buy, digital or physical. (October 24th)

Fantasy Life

Fantasy Life
This adorable little game from Level 5 and Brownie Brown combines RPG stylings with an Animal Crossing-style sim. Sure, you can save the world if you want, but you can also tackle less adventurous tasks like fishing. It looks to be the perfect game for the 3DS, allowing you to live your life on the go. Plus, it has music by Nobou Uematsu. That's a plus in anyone's book. (October 24th)

Tales of Hearts R

Tales of Hearts R
This is the latest Tales game, and actually a remake of the original 3DS game of the same name. If you're already into the Tales series, then you know what you're in for: an action RPG with heavy story elements. However, compared to the original game, R has new anime cutscenes, full voice acting, new characters, and of course, revamped 3D graphics for the Vita. If you love Japanese games, the Vita is bursting with them. (November 11th)

Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA F 2nd

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U
One of the biggest releases this holiday is actually two games: Super Smash Bros. is coming out on both the 3DS and Wii U. The 3DS version arrives first, making the frenetic Nintendo fighting game portable and adding new single player modes that let you upgrade and customize your fighters. And speaking of fighters: this game features Mario, Sonic, Pac-Man, and Mega Man all in the same brawler. It's pretty impressive! Then, in November, the Wii U version brings the battle home, with added stages and gameplay (but the roster stays the same across both games). You'll also be able to pick up Gamecube controllers and a USB adapter for them if you love that classic control style. If you're a Nintendo fan, both of these games are must-haves. (3DS - October 3rd, Wii U - November)

Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire

Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire
It's hard to avoid the immense popularity of Pokemon! One of the most beloved iterations of the series, Ruby and Sapphire, are getting remade for the 3DS. Aside from the return to the land of Hoenn, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire will also bring back secret bases, Acro and Mach bikes, and Pokemon contests. You'll also get the improvements from X and Y, such as customizable characters and new Mega Evolutions. Pick a side now! (November 21st)

Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth

Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth
Do you like Etrian Odyssey? What if we told you there's a Persona game coming with that gameplay, but the characters from Persona 3 and 4? Yeah, we thought you might be interested. This 3DS title takes the dungeon-crawler gameplay from Atlus' other popular series and drops some of your favorite characters into it -- plus, it has that groovy-looking logo. If you don't have a 3DS yet, there's also a great limited edition model you can pick up for the game. (November 25th)

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix
We know a lot of you out there love Kingdom Hearts, so we'd be remiss not to mention that the latest HD remaster is on its way for PS3! 2.5 Remix will include Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix and Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix in HD. If you're a long-time fan enduring the wait for KHIII, this might not be a bad way to spend it. The remaster will also include Kingdom Hearts Re:coded as HD cinematics, so you can watch and catch up if you missed that game. Plus: trophies. (December 2nd)
