Anime Review

Kamisama Kiss might seem a little "familiar" to you if you've seen Inuyasha. But while Inuyasha was in-your-face, Kamisama Kiss is a bit more subtle, although it goes for the comedy element in that same style as all modern anime.

Nanami is a 17-yr old High School girl with a few problems presented in the first 5 minutes, and by problems, I mean she's homeless. Her father amassed a lot of gambling debts, he's run off and the house was seized, she was kicked out, and soon finds herself sitting on a park bench contemplating the fact that she's going to have to spend the night there. But she hears someone yelling for help and finds a man in a tree scared to death of a small dog barking at him.

She shoos away the dog, and the grateful man comes down and they both explain their situations to each other. The man offers her a place to stay since he doesn't want to go home -- and then he bestows a kiss on her forehead. Following his crude hand-drawn map, she finds his house to be a run-down shrine. And soon she's seeing spirits inside the shrine. It doesn't take her long to figure out that Yokai (Japanese supernatural monsters) are running the place -- no wonder the man didn't want to go home!

Kamisama KissHowever, the spirits seems to think she's their Land-God. And it's that symbol on her forehead that's giving them that impression. Symbol, what symbol?? Oh, that kiss? Crap!

So here's the set-up to the series. She's been "chosen" to become the God of this Shrine, and perform godly duties even though she's simply a normal human girl. And the fox demon who's been taking care of the place, the pretty-boy fox-demon, I might add, wants nothing to do with her, and yet, she makes him her familiar (again, in a similar way to Inuyasha), so of course we all know where the story is going to lead.

Tomoe, her familiar now, has to obey her commands, keep her safe (as other Yokai will be attracted to the symbol on her forehead also and make her a target), and also teach her how to be a Land-God. And of course, his stubbornness and hot-headedness clash with her willful disobedience and kindhearted ways, so of course, if opposites attract this will be a match made in heaven. But the growling at each other makes for some very entertaining watching to see *how* they get there, even though we already know that they will get there.

Kamisama KissNow of course, no romance would be strong without a few bumps in the road to test each other with; and the series provides plenty of bumps in the forms of a pretty-boy teen-idol crow-demon who wants to eat Nanami's heart, or an adorable white snake spirit that decides that he's engaged to our newly-minted Land-God.

And Nanami learns more and more what her powers can and can't do as she's tasked with matchmaking for a fish-god and a young boy, but that's just the start of her deity-duties, and poor Tomoe has to figure out how to keep this fragile lump of flesh safe from harm until her god powers fully form and she's worthy of being the kind of god that he's proud to be familiar of -- because right now, she's an embarrassment, by being so... human.
