Mysterious Girlfriend X
Anime Review
Watching this anime definitely involves setting anyone's level of comfort probably a bar or two higher. Now this is perhaps a warning for the first episode, and if that threshold is passed, then the desire to see what would happen in Mysterious Girlfriend X might outweigh feelings of being grossed out. The gross factor is the main character's daily activity of swallowing saliva/drool as a mean of communication.
The story of Mysterious Girlfriend X is this, Tsubasaki Akira, a relatively average student meets Urabe Mikoto, a seemingly mysterious girl who he later swallows spit from a sleeping Urabe.
Other than a drool exchange, the timeless theme of a teenager's first romance and relationship is explored. When should a person be able to hug another gender? What topics should be spoken about when a guy takes a girl out? Should a person be concerned if there is competition from other people? How much can drool facilitate feelings or 'state of being' for anyone?
Throw in a close knit supporting cast of school mates and explore the lives of Akira and Urabe, as they began to date secretly.
 Mysteriously Girlfriend X also has an element that this reviewer enjoys greatly; watching Urabe cut paper. The place where she also holsters the gun is as unique as always seeing the wind flow through and blow at Urabeís skirt upward.
Mysterious Girlfriend X is a 13 episode series that began airing Spring to Summer of 2012, and this was neatly broadcast a few days afterwards on Crunchy Roll. There is also an ongoing manga series in Japan (published by the time this review was written) eight volumes and counting, published by Kodansha.
Obviously this series doesnít fit the norm of any specific anime out there, but its interesting premises makes for a good draw in figuring out what can possibly be explored and in seeing what new angle there must be when dealing with the aspect of an innocent guy meeting an equally innocent girl and then embarking on a relationship.
