I'm always suprised when I come across an anime fan who hasn't seen One Piece, although on some level I can understand why: With over 600 episodes chances are pretty high that you'll never get to watch the entire series. But I think if you can move beyond being a completist there's a real magic to the creations of Eiichiro Oda which are worth seeing. And one of the things I admire about this show (and the manga) are the unique qualities of a wide range of characters. So here is a quick guide via animated gifs to the Straw Hat Pirates.
Monkey D. Luffy
Luffy is the main hero of One Piece and he reminds me of a pirate version of Tom Sawyer. He's brash and is known to cause more of his fair share of trouble, which makes him loveable.
Tony Tony Chopper
Tony is a human/reindeer hybrid who has the ability to change his appearance. He's the doctor of the Straw Hat Pirates and is sometimes mistaken for their pet.
Roronoa Zoro
Zoro is a master swordsman and former bounty hunter who was the first crew member to join Luffy. He's know for carrying three swords and his short cut green hair and battle scars.
Nami
Nami is a cat burglar and a navigator for the crew. She has a tattoo on her shoulder and makes frequent hair style and fashion changes through the show.
Sanji
Sanji is both a pirate and a cook for the crew. He has a pretty good sense of style as well, and likes to get dressed up every now and then and wear a tie.
Usopp
What I love about Usopp is that his nose looks like one of the Big Blue Meanies from the Yellow Submarine film. He likes to lie and acts as a sniper for the crew.

Nico Robin
No pirate crew would be complete without an archaeologist, which is Nico's role.
Brook
Brook is an undead pseudo-immortal skeleton that the crew found drifting on a ship. He acts as a musician and swordsman for the crew.
Franky
Franky is a cyborg who started his career leading a group of ship dismantlers. He's at least seven feet tall and is partial to wearing a large golden chain necklace and Hawaiian shirts.
And here are a few other things we love about One Piece:
The Fights
One Piece is very much a shōnen manga at heart, so the anime series is filled with tons of action (which makes it quite entertaining to watch).
The Food
One thing I love about this series is that pirates tend to get hungry so they really like to eat. If you want to read a definitive guide to the food and beverages in the show go here.
