Super Dimension Century Orguss
Super Dimension Century Orguss
Anime DVD Review by Michael Pinto

Super Dimension Century OrgussSuper Dimension Century Orguss had everything that you could ask for in an early 80s anime show an intricate science fiction plotline, hot looking mecha, compelling characters, and even some half decent animation (well for a television budget, after all this wasn't a feature film). So, how could this classic anime series have been over-looked for so long?

Debuting in 1983 Orguss was the follow-up series to Macross, which was a groudbreaking anime series on every level and arguably the most important anime franchise of that decade. When Macross was bought over to America as "Robotech" an entire generation of American fanboys were introduced to anime for the first time. However, sadly, Orguss was never rolled into Robotech and thus an entire generation of American otaku would never know about the series.

009-1
009-1
Anime DVD Review by Brian Cirulnick

009-1Based on the hugely popular 'Cyborg 009' franchise, 009-1 creates a new flavor from the following recipe: Mix "James Bond 007" with "Cyborg 009", add a dash of "Le Femme Nikita" and a heaping tablespoon of "Cutey Honey".

Nearly naked, beautiful busty babes are cyborg spys who try and keep the cold war from turning too hot. Set in an alternate reality where the cold war has been ongoing for 140 years, the world has divided into the western and eastern blocks, and the two sides play a cat-and-mouse game of espionage, stealing secrets, and counter-intelligence.

Simplified Anatomy for Comic Book Superheros
Simplified Anatomy for Comic Book Superheros Book Review
by Brian Cirulnick

Simplified Anatomy for Comic Book SuperherosIt all started with Alex Toth. Whilst character-designing for Hanna-Barbera, he essentially created a new artform, the "simplified" superhero, which gave rise to masterpieces such as Space Ghost and The Herculoids. Comic artists such as Steve Rude fought tooth and nail to legitimize the style as valid for the printed page during a time when ultra-realism was the 'look' Marvel and DC wanted. Twenty years later, the artform was again revolutionized by "Batman: The Animated Series", which extrapolated what Toth began and made it more extreme, with exaggerated pointy chins, extra curvaceous femme fatales, and a stark look that became more than the sum of its parts.

Audio Review
by Brian Cirulnick

PaprikaGet the jump on Satoshi Kon's latest masterpiece by grabbing this simply amazing OST. If you liked the music from Paranoia Agent, this is the same composer (Susumu Hirasawa), but with more money. Kon has delivered a film which is kind of like Hello Kitty crashing headlong into Philp K. Dick — it's a bizzare and twisted view of the dark side of "cute" and delves deeply into the collective Japanese psyche.
