Soul Eater
Anime DVD Review by Brian Cirulnick

Soul EaterSoul Eater moves fast, even for anime. There's a cast of really weird characters, all of whom have their own "special" abilities (I mean, aside from having kick-ass abilities, they also all come with bizarre personality quirks). They even have a character named Justin Freakin' Christ, which is pretty damn funny, as far as we are concerned.

Visually, the show is incredibly well-realized, and although a lot of that can be attributed to the manga, it's clear that the anime talent involved LOVED that character designs and designing the world they inhabit. Furthermore, even as an action-series, the point of which is to keep you glued to your seat with the action, the action itself is AMAZING. Really. Read More...

Evangelion 1.01
Anime DVD Review by Brian Cirulnick

EvangelionAll this anime fan has to say about this is... "OH YEAH BABY!!!"

There is only a handful of anime that can truly be deemed revolutionary. Yamato, Gundam, Macross... and Evangelion. And we're living in a world where it is now normal to take an existing franchise and "reboot" it (i.e., Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, "V").

So, what have we got here? Simply one of the greatest things I've seen in a very long time. Unbelievably amazing in every aspect. Looking like it had an unlimited budget, the film is a feast for the eyes -- seriously, this is the way the series SHOULD have looked, with crisp, clean lines and spectacular action sequences. Not that the original was that bad, after all, we're talking about GAINAX, but, I mean.. this is just... Wow. You're sitting there with your jaw open, thinking "oh... my... god..." Read More...

The Story of Saiunkoku
Anime DVD Review by Brian Cirulnick

The Story of SaiunkokuWe have a problem. The King is stupid, lazy, not interested in governing, and is also apparently gay. This presents a serious issue, as a blood-heir is a requirement. And the other problems are tantamount to the regime crumbling into chaos.

The King's advisors have taken it onto themselves to solve this problem. There's a young lady of high-rank whose family has fallen on hard times, and, for the right sum, would agree to become the King's Consort. Maybe she can convince him to take an interest in being a ruler, and since she's also quite pretty, convince him to perform other ummm.., "acts" for his kingdom. Read More...

Comic Party Revolution
Anime DVD Review by Brian Cirulnick

Comic Party RevolutionDo you know what doshinji is? Okay, get your mind out of the gutter, not *all* doshinji is hentai. Doshinji is fan-made/fan-published manga, what we here in the states used to call "fanzines", although doshinji, much like fan-fic, expands upon the characters and the universes of a particular manga or anime franchise/series; they create "unlicensed" works, which, because Japan isn't as litigious as the USA, they are able to sell to other fans without the studios coming down on their heads with an army of lawyers. (To be fair also, some doshinji is completely original, it just isn't published by a manga publisher, it's self-published by the author.) Read More...

Manga Review

Ghost in the ShellWe've done many reviews for this particular franchise, but somehow the manga never hit our radar....until now.

Well, there's no way this one could have missed, just by the sheer size alone. Kodansha Comics, now publishing in the USA (where they essentially rule in Japan), is making a big splash by publishing in a large format. Read More...

Genshiken: The Society for the Study of Modern Visual CultureIf the Otaku "lifestyle" is actually more important to you than the anime, or the manga, or the gaming, or the collecting of PVC figurines, or any of that stuff, if you're otaku just because... well, you're OTAKU (i.e. Otaku is a way of life versus Otaku is just a f#$@!!! hobby), well then... this is MOST DEFINITELY the manga of your dreams.
