Oh! Edo Rocket
Oh! Edo Rocket
Anime DVD Review by Brian Cirulnick

Oh! Edo RocketWe're going to need the Mythbusters for this one. According to a reliable source, during Japan's medieval period, a fireworks artisan created a firework so powerful, it launched a woman into the moon.

And this series makes it appear plausible, but only if you give in to the absolute silliness of it. Packed with plotline and bursting with breadth, this series rockets to the top of our "must see" list simply because there's so much going on that, after you've watched about 4 episodes, it becomes an addiction. Sengoku Basara: Samurai Kings
Sengoku Basara: Samurai Kings
Anime Blu-ray Review by Brian Cirulnick

Sengoku Basara: Samurai KingsReally, who needs an army when you're essentially a super-powered Samurai? All those troops we see are there, it seems, to just hold the ground fought for, not to actually fight for it. All the fighting is done by the major characters, who all have enough devastating power to shake the Earth to it's very core.

Based on the videogame series, this anime seeks to extend/expand the storyline from the game as well as present the characters with deeper aspirations than their one-dimensional counterparts in the game itself. Read More...

Japanese Cinema DVD Review
by Brian Cirulnick

Japanese CinemaHey... wanna watch a REALLY, REALLY BAD MOVIE? If Mystery Science Theater 3000 ever makes a comeback, we nominate this for their first episode. It's literally one of those "so bad that it's good" films, which ironically, makes this film a recommended pick.

For one, it looks GREAT, even for a 20-yr old movie, secondly, it's like the last of the "models on wires" Kaiju-type films before computers came along and changed the landscape of special effects forever. And thirdly, I've got a stack of anime magazines from 1989 that hyped this film shamelessly, so I personally was dying to see it at some point. Read More...

Bagi, the Monster of Mighty Nature (大自然の魔獣 バギ)
Bagi, the Monster of Mighty Nature
(大自然の魔獣 バギ)

Anime Review by Brian Cirulnick

TezukaEver wondered where the anime-cat-girl thing, so popular in cosplay, got its start? Right here. For furry fanboys, this is their wet-dream come true, as Bagi is a genetically engineered half-girl, half mountain lion and ... wait for it.... Pink! And spends half the movie naked, but then again, so do a lot of furries.

The flick is an early 80's anime, and it shows -- time has not treated the film well stylistically. It's Tezuka after all, so you can expect cartoony. And you can also expect a heavy-handed morality play, like Star Trek TOS always throws at you. And like Frank Gorshin being black on one side and white on the other, Bagi is a morality tale about messing with DNA, and what happens when your creations don't fit in with society's norms.
