Eureka Seven
Anime DVD Review
I've seen all 50 episodes and without a doubt this is one of the best shows I've watched in the last 10 years. It's just pouring over with so much creativity and heart and soul, I have to believe it was created by people who truly adore anime and wanted to write a love letter to the medium.
Design, production, acting, music, writing, pacing, plot twists...it's all there and it's all top notch. It passes what I consider to be the ultimate test — each episode ends much earlier than I want them to.
As usual, I watched two episodes per day (over lunch) and in most cases two episodes per day of anything is about all I need... but with this one I had to force myself to punch the stop button and pry myself out of the chair.
Also, there was no point during the show when I got the feeling they were spinning their wheels until they could figure out where the story was going next. One of the things I love about it is that it knows what the core story arc is and every episode takes a step toward that goal.
Eureka Seven works on a wide variety of themes throughout its story. One of the most prevalent themes in the series is racial and religious tolerance and harmony, which is carried through the characters' relationships as well the series' conflicts.
Some of the other more global themes that the series covers consist of issues such as allegories of real world conflicts and wars, current political climates from Japan and abroad, depictions of various subcultures and related musical movements that span several generations, and ties to environmental movements.
So I give this one straight A's for story, character growth, music, design, animation quality, art direction, acting, on and on. It sets high standards for itself and meets them on every count. Eureka Seven won multiple awards at the 2006 Tokyo International Anime Fair, including Best Television Series, Best Screenplay for Dai Sato, and Best Character Designs for Kenichi Yoshida.
Eureka 7. Highly, HIGHLY recommended to one and all even if I still can't figure out what the title means. HOLY FRAKKIN' HELL this is a great series!!!
