Samurai Deeper Kyo
Anime DVD Review
Imagine that you have a split personality, one side good, while the other is evil. And the evil side is the most feared swordfighter in Japanese history, Kyo, the demon eyed samurai — a man with a long string of enemies — while the good side is blissfully unaware of the demon within.
Samurai Deeper Kyo blends elements of actual Japanese history with a bit of fantasy, similar to the successful formula of Rurouni Kenshin, but this series has a much darker edge to it.
Mibu Kyoshiro is an above average swordsman traveling the countryside selling medicine and acting as healer. He is immediately captured by a female bounty hunter named Shiina, who unwittingly settles for the tiny bounty on Kyoshiro, not realizing that Kyoshiro is also Demon Eyes Kyo — a man wanted for the murder of more than a thousand men. She ends up traveling with Kyoshiro and the two quickly form an alliance (mostly because Kyoshiro is attracted to Shiina).
However, as the two face the adventures that lay before them, when Kyoshiro's life is truly threatened, Demon Eyes Kyo emerges as the dominant personality, and the blood-letting on a grand scale begins.
Samurai Deep Kyo sports an interesting and innovative blend of elements (Shiina's hand-held gatling gun was of particular interest to this reviewer) that make this samuari drama an exciting and imaginative trip through the Tokugawa Shogunate era. If samurai swords clashing, teeth gnashing, and rivers running red with blood turn you on, if you're already a fan of Inu Yasha, Blade of the Immortal, or Rurouni Kenshin, then Samurai Deeper Kyo is the series you desperately need to get your mitts on.
